Rugs
A rug that has started to fray at the edges can quickly become an eyesore and a tripping hazard. Instead of throwing it away, you can fix it with a simple needle and thread. First, trim away any loose threads with sharp scissors. Then, using a strong, thick thread like upholstery or button thread, make a series of small, tight stitches along the damaged edge. Work your way back and forth, pulling the thread firmly to bind the rug's backing together. This basic hand-sewing method, called a whip stitch, can save a favorite rug for years.
For bigger problems like a small burn or a stubborn stain that won't come clean, consider a creative patch. Find a matching piece of fabric or a swatch from a hidden part of the rug, like under a piece of furniture. Carefully cut out the damaged section in a neat square or circle. Then, cut your matching patch to fit perfectly into that hole. Use a strong fabric glue designed for heavy materials to secure the patch in place. Place a heavy book on top and let it dry completely. This trick hides the flaw and gives your rug a second life without needing special tools.
