HVAC Tip
Fans
When a fan starts wobbling, it's often a simple fix. First, make sure the fan is turned off and completely stopped. Check that all the blades are screwed in tightly. If they are, the next step is to balance the fan. Many fans come with a small balancing kit, which is a little plastic bag with a clip and some weights. You clip the weight onto the middle of a blade, turn the fan on low, and see if the wobble gets better or worse. Move the clip to different blades until you find the spot that makes the fan run smoothly. Then, stick the adhesive weight to the top of that blade in the same spot. This usually solves the problem quickly and safely.
For any electrical project, like replacing a light fixture or an outlet, the most important rule is to always turn off the power at the breaker box. Don't just rely on the wall switch. Find the correct breaker in your panel, which might be labeled, and flip it to the "off" position. Then, double-check that the power is truly off by using a voltage tester on the wires you'll be working with. It's a small, inexpensive tool that beeps or lights up if there's still electricity present. Taking this extra minute can prevent a dangerous shock and is the best habit for any DIYer.
