Stained Glass Panels

Stained glass panels add beauty and color to any home, but they can be delicate. If you discover a small crack or a piece of glass that is loose, you can often fix it yourself with a little patience. The key is using the right material: liquid leading or copper foil tape and solder. First, gently clean the area and make sure it is completely dry. For a crack, you can carefully apply liquid leading along the line to seal it. For a loose piece, you might need to apply new copper foil around the edges and then use a soldering iron to melt a tiny bit of new solder, reconnecting it to the surrounding lead lines. Always work in a well-ventilated area and wear safety glasses.

For bigger projects, like taking a panel out of a window to work on it, lay it perfectly flat on a pair of sawhorses or a sturdy table. Support the entire panel so it does not sag and break. Remember, the lead or zinc framework that holds the glass is soft. When handling the panel, always lift from the bottom frame, not by the glass pieces themselves. If a panel is badly damaged with many broken pieces, it might be best to take it to a professional. With careful hands and the right supplies, you can keep your stained glass shining for years to come.
