It’s easy to get swept up in the fun part of a paver project—the design and the top layer. But here’s the honest truth that every homeowner who’s ever laid a patio will tell you: the beauty of your pavers depends almost entirely on what’s underneath them. The base is the unsung hero of any paver installation, and skimping on it is the fastest way to end up with a wobbly, sunken, weed-riddled mess in just a year or two. Let’s talk about why the ground beneath your pavers matters so much and how you can get it right on your own DIY project.

When you step onto a well-installed paver patio, the stones hardly move. They stay flat, the joints stay tight, and rainwater runs off exactly where it should. That stability isn’t magic—it comes from a carefully built foundation that distributes weight evenly and fights the natural forces of frost, rain, and heavy foot traffic. The ground is always trying to shift, expand, and settle, and your base layer is what stands between your pretty pavers and the earth’s constant push and pull. Think of it like building a house: you wouldn’t set the walls directly on bare dirt, so why would you do that to your patio?

The first step in preparing a proper base is excavation. You need to dig down deep enough to accommodate both the base material and the paver thickness while still leaving the finished surface at the height you want. For a typical patio that will see foot traffic, occasional furniture, and maybe a grill, you’ll want to excavate about seven to eight inches below the finished grade. That lets you put in four to six inches of compacted base material, followed by about one inch of bedding sand, and then your pavers. Add another layer, compact again, and repeat until you reach the right depth.
