Let’s be honest, platform beds are a modern marvel. They’re sleek, sturdy, and eliminate the need for a box spring. But when it comes to adding a finished look and hiding that under-bed storage zone, they present a little puzzle: how in the world do you attach a bed skirt when there’s no box spring to tuck it under? If you’ve found yourself staring at a limp bed skirt and a smooth platform, wondering how to make them work together, take a deep breath. The solution is much easier than you think, and you likely already have the main tool you need in your home.
The traditional bed skirt is designed for a mattress-and-box-spring combo. It typically has a flat piece that sits between the two, with the decorative skirt hanging down. Your platform bed, with its solid or slatted base, doesn’t have that handy gap. So, we need to get a little creative. The goal is to secure the top part of the bed skirt directly to the platform itself, allowing the skirt to drape gracefully to the floor, all around your bed. This isn’t a complex carpentry project; it’s more like a simple bedding hack.Your new best friend in this endeavor is something called hook-and-loop tape. You probably know it by its most famous brand name: Velcro. This stuff is perfect because it’s strong enough to hold fabric in place but also allows you to easily remove the skirt for washing. You’ll want to purchase the kind with a sticky adhesive back for the easiest installation. A trip to any fabric, craft, or even hardware store will get you what you need. While you’re there, grab a measuring tape and a pair of scissors.Start by making your bed as you normally would with your fitted and flat sheets. Then, take your mattress off the platform and set it aside safely. This gives you full, easy access to the bed frame. Unfold your bed skirt and lay the top, plain fabric panel flat on the platform. You want it to cover the entire top surface of the platform, right to the edges. This panel is what the decorative skirt is attached to. Smooth it out so there are no major wrinkles. Now, take your hook-and-loop tape. Run a strip of the “hook” side (the rough side) along the very edge of the platform. You can do this on all four sides, creating a full rectangle, or just place several sturdy strips along each side. Press it on firmly according to the package instructions. The next step is to attach the corresponding “loop” side (the soft side) of the tape to your bed skirt’s top panel. Lay the panel back on the platform, aligning it perfectly, and press down gently where you know the tape is to mark the spots. Then, peel off the backing and stick the loop tape to those marked areas on the fabric. The final move is the satisfying one. Carefully align the fabric panel on the platform once more and press it down onto the hook tape. You’ll hear that distinctive ripping sound as it bonds. Start from one side and work your way around, smoothing as you go, ensuring a secure and wrinkle-free hold.Once the top panel is securely fastened, gently lower your mattress back into place. The weight of the mattress will help pin the fabric down even more. Finally, step back and admire your work. Your bed skirt is now neatly attached, hiding storage bins or dust bunnies alike, and giving your bedroom that polished, put-together look. The beauty of this method is its simplicity and flexibility. When it’s time to wash the skirt, just lift the mattress, give the fabric a firm pull to separate the Velcro, and toss it in the laundry. No fuss, no muss. Your platform bed just got a whole new lease on style.
