Wire gauge is one of those things that sounds technical but is actually pretty straightforward once you know the basic idea. Wire gauge simply refers to the thickness of the copper wire inside the plastic jacket. The number works backwards from what you might expect: the smaller the number, the thicker the wire. This color coding is a lifesaver when you’re pulling wire through a wall and can’t always see the printing on the side. But never rely only on color; always check the printed label on the cable to confirm.
When you’re tackling a project like adding a new outlet, replacing a light fixture, or running a line for a ceiling fan, choosing the right wire gauge is step one. If the project connects to an existing circuit, look at the breaker for that circuit to see the amp rating. Then use wire that matches. If you’re running a brand new circuit, plan ahead for what you might plug into it in the future. A kitchen island that currently only holds a coffee maker might someday have a microwave on it, so it’s often smart to run 12 gauge even if you think you only need 14. The extra cost is small, and the safety margin is big.
Another thing to keep in mind: solid versus stranded wire. Most house wiring uses solid copper strands, which stay in place nicely when you screw them down under a terminal.
