Why Your Screws Keep Stripping and How to Fix It for Good

There’s nothing quite as frustrating as driving a screw into a piece of wood, feeling it grab nicely, and then—pop—the driver spins uselessly while the screw head becomes a mangled mess. You’ve just stripped it, and now you’re stuck with a useless fastener that refuses to go in or come out. If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. Stripped screws are one of the most common headaches in home repair, but the good news is that they are almost entirely preventable. Understanding why they happen and how to stop them will save you time, money, and a lot of colorful language.

Stripping happens when the driver bit loses its grip on the screw head. This can be caused by using the wrong bit size or type, applying too much force at an angle, or trying to drive a screw that is simply too hard for the material. Many homeowners reach for whatever screwdriver or drill bit is closest, but that is a fast track to trouble. A Phillips head screw, for example, is designed to cam out—meaning it pushes the bit out when too much torque is applied. That is actually a feature to prevent overtightening, but it also makes Phillips heads more prone to stripping if you are not careful. Using a worn-out bit only makes matters worse because it doesn’t engage the full depth of the cross.

The number one mistake people make is assuming all screwdrivers are the same. There are different sizes within each drive style. A #1 Phillips bit is smaller than a #2, and using a #1 in a #2 screw will slip immediately. The same goes for slotted screws, hex keys, and Torx (star-shaped) drives. Take a second to match the bit to the screw head before you start. If the bit wobbles or doesn’t seat fully, grab a different size. For heavier work like decking or drywall, consider upgrading to a screw with a square or star drive—these are much less likely to strip because the bit fits tightly and resists camming out.

Another big culprit is technique. When you drive a screw at an angle, the bit tilts and chews up the head. Always start straight, and use a steady, moderate speed. If you are using a power drill, set the clutch to a lower number so the drill stops once the screw is seated. That little click means you are no longer cranking down and risking a stripped head. For manual screwdriving, apply firm downward pressure while turning—this keeps the bit engaged. And never, ever use an impact driver on small screws or in soft wood without adjusting your touch. Impact drivers deliver rapid, high-torque bursts that can obliterate a screw head in seconds.

Pilot holes are your friend, especially in hardwoods or when working near the edge of a board. A pilot hole is simply a small hole drilled slightly smaller than the screw’s diameter. It lets the screw threads cut into the wood without having to force its way in, which reduces stress on the screw head and prevents splitting. For most home projects, a pilot hole that’s about 75 percent of the screw’s shank diameter is ideal. If you are working with metal studs or masonry, a pilot hole is absolutely mandatory—and you will also want a lubricant like wax or soap to reduce friction.

Lubrication is an underrated trick. Rubbing a bar of soap, a candle stub, or even a bit of paraffin wax across the threads of a screw before driving it makes a huge difference. The screw slides in more easily, requiring less torque, and the head stays intact. This works wonders for outdoor screws that have to penetrate pressure-treated lumber or for screws going into old, dry wood. Just a quick swipe does the trick.

Despite your best efforts, you will still encounter a stripped screw now and then. In that moment, do not panic. There are several ways to remove one. If the head is still partly intact, try placing a wide rubber band over the head before pushing your bit in. The rubber fills the gaps and gives the bit extra grip. Another option is to use a screw extractor kit, which involves drilling a small hole into the stripped head and then using a special reverse-threaded tool to back it out. For screws that are completely mangled and flush with the surface, a pair of locking pliers (Vise-Grips) can sometimes grab the remaining metal if you can get a purchase on the sides. As a last resort, you can cut a new slot into the head with a rotary tool or hacksaw, then use a flathead screwdriver to turn it.

Prevention really is the best cure. Take a few extra seconds to choose the right bit, drill a pilot hole when in doubt, and lubricate problem fasteners.
