Why Your Washing Machine is Shaking and How to Fix It

If you’ve ever stood in your laundry room and watched your washing machine dance across the floor during the spin cycle, you know it’s both alarming and annoying. That shaking, thumping, and sometimes violent shuddering isn’t just a nuisance—it can damage your floors, loosen connections, and shorten the life of the appliance. Before you call a repair person, take a deep breath. Many causes of a shaking washer are easy to diagnose and fix yourself with a few simple tools and a little patience.

The most common reason for a washing machine to shake is an unbalanced load. Think about how you toss in a heavy pair of jeans, a few towels, and maybe one sneaker. When the machine spins, that heavy wet mass can clump to one side of the drum. The machine tries to compensate by speeding up, but the uneven weight distribution causes the entire unit to vibrate. The fix is straightforward: pause the cycle and redistribute the laundry. Make sure large items are mixed with smaller ones, and avoid washing a single bulky item like a comforter or rug pad alone. You can also try adding a few towels or smaller garments to balance things out. Many modern machines have a rebalancing cycle that will attempt to redistribute the load automatically, but if it still shakes, hitting pause and manually rearranging the wet clothes does the trick.

Another frequent culprit is the floor beneath your washer. If your laundry room has a wooden subfloor or an uneven concrete slab, the machine may not sit level. Over time, vibration can cause the feet to shift, making the problem worse. Grab a bubble level and place it on top of your washer, first front to back, then side to side. If the bubble isn’t centered, adjust the adjustable feet at the bottom corners. Most washers have locking nuts on these feet; loosen the nut with a wrench, turn the foot to raise or lower that corner, then tighten the nut back. Once the machine is level, try running a spin cycle. A steady washer should barely tremble. If the floor is particularly bouncy, you can place a rubber anti-vibration pad under each foot or buy a dedicated washing machine pad. These absorb movement and keep the machine from walking.

If your washer is brand new and shakes during its first few uses, you may have forgotten to remove the shipping bolts. These are large bolts installed at the factory to secure the drum during transport. They must be removed before the machine is used. If left in place, they lock the drum to the cabinet, so the entire washer shakes violently as if it’s trying to break free. Look in your user manual for the location of these bolts—usually on the back panel. Use a wrench to unscrew them, then pull out the plastic spacers. Keep the bolts in a safe place in case you move the machine later. This is a very common oversight, and once those bolts are out, the shake disappears completely.

Over time, internal components can wear out and cause shaking. The suspension springs and shock absorbers that help the drum move smoothly start to weaken after years of use. If you notice a persistent wobble or a loud banging noise even with a balanced load, the shocks or springs may need replacement. You can check by removing the top panel of your washer—usually held by a few screws at the back—and inspecting the springs hanging from the corners of the cabinet to the drum. If they look stretched, rusty, or broken, order a replacement set online. Shocks are small cylinders attached to the base and the drum; if they leak fluid or feel loose when you push on the drum, they need to be changed. A worn drive belt or a loose drum pulley can also cause vibration. If you hear a squealing or rumbling sound along with the shaking, the belt might be slipping or the pulley may be out of alignment. The drum pulley is bolted to the back of the drum; check that the bolts are tight. A loose pulley creates an imbalance that translates into motion.

Finally, check your washer’s installation. If it’s not pushed firmly back against the wall, the drain hose and water supply lines can get pinched or cause the machine to rock. Make sure the machine sits squarely on the floor and that all four feet are in full contact. Sometimes a thick rug or mat under the washer can cause it to wobble; if you have one, try removing it and see if the shaking stops.

A washing machine that shakes is usually a sign that something is out of balance—literally. In most cases, you can fix it yourself with no special skills.
